How To Use Your Hello Disc

In all cases, fold your Hello Disc longways. The tab end should be the last part of the disc to enter your body. Once you feel you can insert the disc no further, use your finger to push the rim up to tuck the disc behind the pubic bone. Don’t be afraid to push up higher, this is what positions the disc correctly and holds it in place.

1. GETTING STARTED
Sterilise your Hello Disc before you first use it. To do this, place the disc in a pot of boiling water for 3 minutes.

Pro tip: Because no one likes a charred Hello Disc try putting your disc inside a whisk to make sure it doesn't touch the bottom of the pot.

2. FOUR WAYS TO WEAR
If you have used a menstrual cup before, you may be used to some fiddling about getting the fold right and then positioning the cup once inserted. Inserting Hello Disc is quite different, and we often hear, "I squeezed it, pushed it in, pushed the front up, and thought, well that won't work!" To their surprise, it does work!

So - let's keep it simple. First, decide on which position you want to wear the tab.

Tucked - Tuck the tab along the length of the Disc; this is where it sits naturally. Tucked is the best position for the tab if you have a low or average cervix or for sex/playtime.

Flipped - Best done by pushing the bottom loop through the top loop, so that you are pushing the loop away from the Disc. Flipped is a great option for an average cervix or if you don't know your cervix height.

Dropped - The tab is dropped down, meaning that it is easy to reach for someone with reach or grip issues, or a user with a high cervix.

Trimmed - The second loop is cut off to shorten the tab. Please check your Disc before you do this to be sure it is the best option for you! This is an excellent choice for someone with a low cervix or if the tab is uncomfortable for you.

3. HOW TO INSERT

  • Squeeze the disc sides together and tuck the tab in if the tab position is tucked or trimmed. (Hold it so that where the tab attaches to the Disc will be inserted last.)
  • You can use your other hand to squeeze the rim at the front if you want to make it narrower.
  • Insert your Disc. Don't worry that it will be opening (if you have used a cup before, it will feel like it isn't working, but it's fine, we promise!).
  • Push the Disc in, angling towards your spine (lower angle if your cervix is lower ).
  • Once you can't push any further, let go and use your finger or thumb to push the front rim up nice and high. The higher you push the front, the more likely it is to be in the right position! Some people can feel a notch where their pubic bone is, but many can't feel anything at all.
  • That's it - done! (consider backing your Disc up with a Hello Pad or Hello Undies until you are confident that you have insertion mastered and can rely on your Hello Disc).

4. HOW TO REMOVE
Removal is the part of the process which may take the most time to get used to. Be patient with yourself while you try different ideas and learn to master removing your Hello Disc!

  • Try removal in the shower for the first couple of times (or every time if you like!). You can practise how you control the speed of removal in this way easily.
  • Removal will differ for each of the tab positions, but the aim is to get your finger through the loop closest to the Disc if possible.
  • Because the Disc is Silicone and the tab is stretchy, you will need to remove it slowly (and use a second finger to push gently on the disc rim as you remove it to control the speed of removal).
  • Aim to get your finger through the loop closest to the Disc for control. Gently pull towards the front of your body and allow the Disc to empty into the toilet.
  • You can line the toilet bowl with toilet paper to reduce splash.
  • If you take a small water bottle with you, you can remove, rinse, wipe and reinsert it without leaving the toilet. This is perfect if you are at work or out and about. Remember - many people can get 12 hours of use out of their Disc before emptying it.

5. LOOKING AFTER YOUR HELLO DISC
We do not recommend leaving your disc in for more than 12 hours.

If possible, rinse your Hello Disc with cold water after each removal to help prevent stains setting in.
Clean with gentle soap and rinse. If you're not near a tap, it's fine to simply wipe out your disc with toilet paper and reinsert until you can rinse it.

At the end of your cycle, sterilise your Hello Disc so it's ready the next time you need it. We recommend storing your cup in one of our organic cotton storage bags and/or in a dry place out of direct sunlight.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.  What is the Hello Disc menstrual disc made from?
Each Hello Disc is FDA-registered and made from 100% premium medical grade silicone.

2. Who designed the Hello Disc?
The Hello Disc menstrual disc is the result of a dream-team collaboration. Hello Period founders Robyn McLean and Mary Bond, a registered nurse, teamed up with renowned menstrual cup and disc guru, Kim Rosas of Period Nirvana to design the Hello Disc. Kim has tried virtually every menstrual disc on the market and felt there was a need for a disc that was easier to remove. And so Hello Disc was born!

3. What size is the Hello Disc?
The Hello Disc menstrual disc is a handy ‘one size fits most’. The 68mm rim of the Hello Disc is designed to fit most users. It offers more capacity than regular tampons, sanitary pads, or menstrual cups (the Hello Disc holds up to 50ml - the equivalent of approx. 5 tampons or pads!).

Why one size?
The vaginal fornix (where the Hello Disc sits) is frequently the same size from one person to another which is why our menstrual disc is a handy ‘one size fits most’.

Also, because the Hello Disc sits higher than a menstrual cup and tucks behind the pubic bone, it’s much easier to have a ‘one size’ option with menstrual discs.

4. Can I wear the Hello Disc during sex?
Yes, you can enjoy no-mess period sex with your Hello Disc in place! As your Hello Disc menstrual disc sits high and behind the pubic bone, it doesn’t get in the way of penetration. You shouldn’t be able to feel a thing with your Hello Disc in during play. No more laying down towels or period sex laundry! We recommend emptying your Hello Disc in advance.

 IMPORTANT:
**The Hello Disc is NOT intended to be used as contraception and will not prevent pregnancy. If you wear your Hello Disc during sexual intercourse and condoms are your sole method of birth control, remove your Hello Disc - the disc has not been tested against condom use and friction may create a micro-tear in the condom.**

5. What is the difference between a Hello Cup and the Hello Disc?
Like menstrual cups, menstrual discs collect your period blood. Unlike menstrual cups, menstrual discs are held in place by being tucked behind the pubic bone rather than by suction - meaning they are a great option if you have an IUD.

Check out our comparison video, here.

Capacity - The Hello Disc will hold up to 50 ml (our L cups hold 29.5 ml). That’s equal to around 5 regular tampons or pads.

Material - Hello Cups are made from medical-grade TPE, Hello Disc's are made from medical-grade silicone.

Position - Menstrual cups sit lower in the vaginal canal. The Hello Disc tucks behind the pubic bone.

Suction - Hello Cups suction when in position. The Hello Disc does not use suction - instead, it sits in place. (This makes the Hello Disc a great choice if you have an IUD!)

Sizes/Cervix heights - Hello Cups come in 3 cervix heights and 3 different sizes. The Hello Disc is great for all cervix heights (just adjust the tab as you need to) and comes in a handy ‘one size fits most’.

6. What’s different about the Hello Disc menstrual disc?
The patented double-loop tab design makes the Hello Disc easier and cleaner to remove than other menstrual discs. The tab can be worn four ways allows for single finger removal and emptying. The double loops also give more control when you are removing the disc - which means less (or no) mess!

7. Is Hello Disc suitable for a teenager?
The Hello Disc is suitable for anyone who prefers internal period products. It sits higher than a menstrual cup so you will want to be comfortable about inserting it and pushing it up.

8. Will I get blood on my hand?
The Hello Disc menstrual disc is designed to be easily removed with one finger and to be mess free. It is possible that you will nail this the first time you try, or it may take a little practice! As you remove the disc, you want to aim for the contents to empty backwards, away from your hand.

9. How long does the Hello Disc last?
With proper care your Hello Disc menstrual disc will last for years. Ideally, you should look to replace your Hello Disc at least every 5 years. The Hello Disc is made from premium medical-grade silicone which is silky smooth and safe for use in the body. Follow the care instructions and keep your disc away from sharp objects - and your family dog or cat who have been known to steal them as chew toys!
